When sabbath comes
“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”
We Michiganders understand the season of winter. It’s the reality that you don’t get a choice about being tucked inside for days and even weeks on end. What we can choose, though, is our attitude — whether we’ll resist it or embrace it and intentionally look for the small joys and quiet gifts that come along with the cold months.
Every season has something good to offer us.
One of the best things winter has taught me is to enjoy the gift of rest when it comes.
Although we have been tucked inside for many months, there has been little rest for our family because we’ve been busy packing and then unpacking box after box.
This week was the first in months where I truly felt settled. With that feeling, I’ve started to sense a quiet, steady rest growing inside me as the pieces of life slowly come back together.
This morning, before I left for work, my favorite farm guy told me how excited he is for our Sabbath this weekend, and I couldn’t agree more. You feel things deeper when you know things are where they should be.
It’s hard to rest when things aren’t in the right place and we were created for rest.
That’s what Sabbath offers us: a steady weekly rhythm that invites us to slow down — not only in our outward actions but also in our inner life.
Even if life hasn’t turned out exactly as you imagined, the practice of Sabbath is here to gently hold you and restore your spirit, offering rest and perspective until things settle and begin to fall back into place.
Tonight at sundown we will enter our Sabbath rest, and as we do I’ll reflect on how good and gracious God has been to us throughout this season.
Are you preparing for Sabbath?
