From my heart to yours
Every once in a while, God gives me words to write and when He does—they end up here.
This too shall pass
I stopped by after work on Friday for a quick visit with one of my older boys. I try to make my rounds seeing my married kids as often as I can. Although these visits may be few and far between, every time we catch up, my cup is always full.
It’s wild to have adult kids who can offer their insights and perspectives on different subjects and scenarios. Somehow they are now often the ones offering advice and unique wisdom regarding our blended family dynamics. After all, they know and understand it much deeper than I do. I didn’t experience divorce as a child like they have.
“Children ought not to be victims of the choices adults make for them”
My heart is always seeking to understand the depth of the pain they now carry and how to have empathy with them in that hurt. Yes, there are beautiful fall afternoons out on back decks carving pumpkins, but there are also lonley night cries only God hears.
They coexist in every home, I’m sure.
Trauma doesn’t inform you when it’s going to trigger you again. It just comes.
My son essentially said to me: “Mom, I’m so excited for you and T to become grandparents because that season is going to bring you and him some normalcy to having kids around.
It broke my heart and healed my heart at the same time.
He’s right. Grandbabies will be such a redeeming new beginning for all of us.
The first in our family to only know the beauty of who our family is today.
There are sure to be more reminders ahead, but they are lessoning as we all envision some of the coming changes that occur more naturally for kids.
Things like going away for college, weddings, and buying their first homes. All of these chapters leading them to a place where they’ll be starting their own family and my favorite farm guy and I will get to sit back and love them all from a new position entirely.
Long haul vision isn’t for the faint of heart, it’s for ones chasing after the prize.
